OPEN MIC NIGHT WITH JOE MAX

So what is an open mic or open mike?  (Derived from open microphone) It is a live show where audience members may perform at the microphone. Performers sign up for a time slot with me the host.

Key word is OPEN!

Anyone can come, sign up, and perform original or non-original music, poetry, performance art, etc. They are a vital part of any music community, especially for songwriters and poets, as a place to come together, share art, connect with each other, and get feedback on their work.

These events are typically focused on performance arts like poetry and the spoken word, music, and comedy.

These shows provide an opportunity for musicians to gain experience performing to a live audience without having to go through the process of getting normal music gigs, which is very difficult to do without experience of live performance

Open mics for musicians have gained popularity in recent years providing a much-needed outlet for singer-songwriters. Prior to their popularity, the only outlet generally were folk clubs, which were not always friendly towards creators of new music, preferring traditional music

As the host I have a huge role in setting the tone and care deeply about local music community, building connections between artists, and fostering a positive artistic space. I take personal ownership over the event and have a clear reverence for the art and the artists who create it. The music is the reason for getting together, and the performances make up the content, but feel that it’s the overall feeling of community that make my open mic special.

No strangers – just friends we don’t know yet!
